Prototype Starship spacecraft explodes after landing

Google News

The prototype of the Starship spacecraft, developed by SpaceX for long-range space flights and launched from a site in Cameron County, Texas, exploded a few minutes after landing.

As reported in the broadcast, the explosion occurred due to “an excess of rocket fuel.”

Before that, the prototype SN10 during a test flight rose into the air to an altitude of about 10 kilometers, performed a turn, controlled descent, re-started the engines before landing, and successfully landed.

SpaceX is developing a transport system consisting of a fully reusable Super Heavy launch vehicle and a Starship spacecraft. The system will allow delivering satellites, crews, and cargo both to near-Earth orbits and to the Moon and Mars.

This is the third launch of Starship to an altitude of more than ten kilometers. Previously, the launches were conducted on December 10 and February 3, when the missiles exploded and collapsed during landing, but the tests were still considered successful since the main goal was not to land, but to check the behavior of the rocket in the air: turns, controllability when planning to the earth's surface, and the performance of the systems.

The head of the company, Elon Musk, even before the launch, estimated the probability of a successful landing at the first launch as only one-third.
