Biden no longer considers Russia to be the main geopolitical adversary

There is only one country that can challenge the international system — and this is not the Russian Federation.

The White House regards China as its main adversary in the geopolitical arena, and Russia as a “serious challenge.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated this in his keynote speech on foreign policy on March 3.

The head of the State Department called US-China relations “the largest geopolitical challenge of the 21st century,” since only the PRC has “sufficient economic, diplomatic, military and technological power to pose a serious challenge to a stable, open international system.”

“Some countries pose serious challenges for us, including Russia, Iran, and North Korea, but China's challenge is different,” Blinken said.

In this regard, the Biden administration will approach relations with China “from a position of strength.”

“Our relationship with China will be in a spirit of competition where it should be, in a spirit of cooperation where possible and in a spirit of competition when necessary,” the secretary of state said.

In addition, under Biden, the United States will abandon the forceful overthrow of authoritarian regimes.

“We have tried these tactics in the past and no matter how well-intentioned it didn’t work,” Antony Blinken explained this decision.

Now the US “will do it differently” — setting its own example and encouraging undemocratic countries to reform.

Recall that on the eve of the Treasury and the US State Department introduced a new package of sanctions against Russia due to human rights violations and, in particular, the trial of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
