Microsoft announced the involvement of Russian intelligence in a large-scale cyberattack

The president of the US corporation Microsoft, Brad Smith, said that Russian intelligence is allegedly related to a large-scale cyber attack launched in March 2020 against US government departments and private companies using the Orion software company SolarWinds.

“At this stage, we have solid evidence that points to Russian intelligence, and no indications that would lead to someone else,” Smith said at a hearing before the Special Committee on Intelligence of the US Senate.

The head of the American computer security company FireEye, Kevin Mandia, in turn, said that the tools used in the hacking are not similar to those used by China, North Korea, or Iran.

“They are most similar to what Russia uses,” Mandia said. According to him, it was a large operation, in which many people were involved and it took a lot of time to prepare. Such an operation could only be carried out at the state level, the expert assured.

In December 2020, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Russia was involved in large-scale cyber attacks on the systems of US government departments and “governments around the world.”

On December 14, Reuters reported that Russian hackers allegedly attacked the US Department of Homeland Security and gained access to internal communications in the department. At the same time, the attack was noticed only almost a year later — after about nine months. The attack was part of a campaign that also hacked into the systems of the U.S. Treasury Department and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. Moscow has denied allegations of hacking attacks on the U.S. Department and considers them to be unfounded.
