Lawyers for the ex-president could not prevent the prosecutor's office from getting to his tax returns
The US Supreme Court has allowed the Manhattan District Attorney's Office to use former President Donald Trump's tax returns in a criminal case over his alleged tax evasion.
This is reported by Axios, referring to the court order, which, thus, rejected the petition of Trump's lawyers.
Journalists call the appeal of the former president's defense the last legal obstacle in this long-running lawsuit and an attempt to prevent the prosecutor's office from getting to Trump's tax returns.
For the first time, the Manhattan prosecutor's office summoned the accounting firm Mazars USA, which serves the Trump Organization, to court back in 2019. It was then that an investigation was launched into payments that Trump's ex-lawyer, Michael Cohen, made on behalf of his boss during the 2016 presidential election.
In recent months, the investigation has intensified — the prosecutor's office suspects tax and bank fraud. Trump, on the other hand, denies any wrongdoing and calls it a politicized “witch hunt.”
Recall that in October last year, the US media said that Trump did not pay federal income tax for 10 years out of the last 15, and in 2016 and 2017 transferred only $750.
