The US Formally Returning to UN Human Rights Council
The United States is officially returning to the UN Human Rights Council. President Joe Biden instructed the Department of State to “re-establish relations” with that body.
This is stated in a statement by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
According to him, the Council is not a full-fledged body and needs reforming in many aspects. However, the Trump administration's decision to withdraw from this UN body “did not bring about significant change.”
As noted, in the near future, the United States will interact with the Council as an observer and will have the opportunity to speak on the Council, participate in negotiations and cooperate with others to submit resolutions.
According to the Associated Press, in the future, Washington will “seek election as a full member.”
Recall that the United States announced its withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council in June 2018. Washington explained this decision with a biased attitude towards the United States and Israel.
