Biden claims food shortage for 36 million Americans due to pandemic
US President Joe Biden has announced a food shortage for 36 million Americans as the United States economy continues to struggle in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. He said this while speaking at the White House.
So Biden commented on the need to accept his proposed package of stimulus measures in the amount of $1.9 trillion.
“It is absolutely clear that the economy is still in a difficult position. More than 10 million people were left without work, 4 million without work for six months or more;<...> 24 million adults and 12 million children literally lack food, ” he said, adding that he intends to act quickly in this regard.
The plan he proposed provides for, among other things, the allocation of $160 billion for a vaccination program for the population. He also intends to fulfill his promise to pay 1.4 thousand dollars to those in need without cutting this amount. “It was promised to the American people,” Biden explained.
Earlier in January, it was reported that US GDP fell 3.5 percent last year, the worst record since World War II.
The damage to the United States from the coronavirus pandemic is estimated at $16 trillion, said former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers. About half of this amount is associated with GDP losses as a result of quarantines and the suspension of some sectors of the economy.
