U.S. Senate confirms Mayorkas as Secretary of Homeland Security

The U.S. Senate has approved Alejandro Mayorkas as head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), CNN reported February 2.

56 senators voted for Mayorkas, 43 opposed.

As the TV channel notes, the new head of the IMB will play an important role in the new administration and “will begin to roll back the immigration policy” of the previous American leader, Donald Trump.

Mayorkas previously headed the US Immigration Service and later served as Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security in the Obama administration.

In addition, the Senate voted to approve Pete Buttidzic as US Secretary of Transportation. His candidacy was nominated by the American leader Joe Biden on December 15.

Previously, Buttigieg served as mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and fought for the Democratic presidential nomination. He dropped out of the presidential race in early March 2020, expressing support for Biden.

On January 26, the US Senate approved the candidacy of Tony Blinken for the post of head of the State Department. On the same day, Janet Yellen became the head of the country's Ministry of Finance.
