The Black Lives Matter movement has been nominated for the Nobel Prize
The movement succeeded in mobilizing people from all social groups, not just African Americans, which distinguished Black Lives Matter from its predecessors.
The anti-racism movement Black Lives Matter has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. The Guardian reported this on Friday, January 29.
Norwegian parliamentarian Petter Eide attributed the nomination to the fact that the movement has forced countries outside the U.S. to fight racism in their own societies:
“I believe that one of the key problems we face not only in America but also in Europe and Asia is increased conflict based on inequality. Black Lives Matter has become a very important global movement to combat racial injustice. Activists have been very successful in raising global awareness of racial injustice,” said Eide.
He added that the movement was able to mobilize people from all social groups, not just African-Americans. And this is how the movement differed from its predecessors.
The Black Lives Matter movement became active in the United States at the end of May 2020 following the death of African-American George Floyd after his arrest.
It was also reported that a stretch of the street leading to the White House in Washington was named after the Black Lives Matter movement.
