The U.S. seized a Pantsir S-1 missile system in Libya
The system was purchased from Russia by the United Arab Emirates and then delivered to Haftar's army. The latter lost it along with the airbase.
The U.S. military seized a Russian-made Pantsir S1 air defense system in Libya and transported it to a base in Germany, The Times reported Thursday, January 28.
According to the newspaper, the secret operation was carried out last summer. A special military detachment arrived in a US Air Force C-17 Globemaster military transport plane to Zuwara airfield (west of Tripoli), where it loaded the complex and took it to the Ramstein base in Germany.
The complex itself was bought from Russia by the United Arab Emirates and then delivered to Marshal Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army. The complex was lost when Haftar's forces attempted to take over the capital Tripoli. In the course of the counterattack, government forces recaptured the airbase that Haftar controlled, where the Pantzir-C1 was found.
Recall that last May it was reported about the destruction of six air defense systems in various areas in western Libya. Among them were Russian Pantsir SAMs.
