Biden's plans: restore relations with the EU, strengthen NATO and contain Russia
The newly elected US President Joseph Biden in his foreign policy will focus on cooperation with the European Union, strengthening NATO, and confronting Russia and China.
Michael Carpenter, the long-term foreign policy adviser to Biden, executive director of the Penn-Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, said this during an online discussion at the Kyiv Security Forum.
“The central theme of President Biden’s foreign policy, as he emphasized, is the restoration and strengthening of our alliances and partnerships,” Carpenter said.
In particular, relations with the EU will be normalized, which have deteriorated under President Donald Trump.
“Collaborating with our European friends after the post-rebuilding, revitalizing trade and reducing the barriers created by the previous administration — as you know, the previous administration viewed the EU as a strategic adversary — all of this will be turned 180 degrees,” he said.
We will regard the EU as our primary partner, and NATO as the stronghold of transatlantic relations, “Carpenter said.
He recalled that Trump once questioned the legitimacy and reliability of Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which obliges the members of the Alliance to protect each other.
“I think President Biden will seize the opportunity as soon as possible to strengthen NATO not only in terms of manpower, mobility and combat readiness, which is certainly extremely important, and most importantly, in terms of NATO cohesion for political consensus. Without which, by the way, 5 — my article is not worth the paper on which it is written “, — Biden's adviser emphasized.
He also noted that the United States will continue its policy of containing Russia and China.
“President Biden understands that this is not just a competition between states with a conflict of interest. It is a fundamental clash between liberal democracy and an authoritarian oligarchy or authoritarian kleptocracy,” he stressed.
