EU may sue AstraZeneca
States of the European Union should increase pressure on the Swedish-British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca for delays in supplying vaccines and think about bringing the company to account through the courts.
This was stated by Latvian Foreign Minister, Edgar Rinkevichs, who reports DW.
“This possibility (of bringing to court) should be considered and coordinated by EU countries,” said Rinkevics.
Meanwhile, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, called on vaccine manufacturers that have signed contracts with the EU to fulfill their obligations, because, she said, Europe has contributed billions of dollars to develop drugs against coronavirus and now expects the obligations to her.
According to Von der Leyen, Brussels intends to create a mechanism for controlling the export of vaccines outside the EU.
Recall that the problems in the production of vaccines AstraZeneca appeared due to lower productivity in the enterprises in the European Union, which are involved in the supply chain.
Earlier, the company said that the number of available AstraZeneca vaccines will be 60% less than expected due to production problems.
