Biden overturns Trump's ban on transgender people serving in the military
U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday lifted a ban on transgender people to serve in the military, thus reversing the order of President Donald Trump.
This is reported by Politico.
The decision, Biden's latest move to rescind Trump's executive orders, was announced by the White House before Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was solemnly sworn in.
The move restores an Obama-era policy that allowed transgender service in the military.
Unlike Trump's ban, Biden's move came as no surprise.
“I really believe ... that if you're able, and you're qualified to serve, and you can maintain the standards, you should be allowed to serve,” Austin said.
Donald Trump announced in July 2017 a ban on transgender people serving in the military. He later adopted Pentagon recommendations to limit the ban to transgender people who require special treatment.
However, a series of lawsuits put the policy on hold. But the U.S. Supreme Court in January overturned a lower court decision, blocking the policy, allowing it to go into effect.
