Celebrities called on Biden to affect climate change
Biden may be remembered as the president who “took humanity off the cliff.”
Actors, politicians, and businessmen, including actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, sent an open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden calling for a response to climate change. The letter was signed by more than 150 people. It is published on the Climat Power website.
“You may be remembered as the 'climate president' who led humanity away from the precipice. You can ensure that the world's energy systems transition from fossil fuels to clean energy while creating many jobs, reducing pollution, and eliminating economic, racial, and health disparities in the process,” the letter reads.
Its authors praised Biden's executive order to return the U.S. to the Paris climate agreement, which he signed in his first hours in the office but stressed that it was not enough and that “everything we can do” should be done.
Also, the letter's authors believe that the climate crisis, for the problems it brings, represents “the greatest economic opportunity” for innovation, job creation, and investment.
Besides DiCaprio and Bezos, the letter was signed by actress Natalie Portman, Mastercard Chairman Ajay Banga, European Parliament Environment, Health and Food Safety Committee Chairman Pascal Canfin, actress Zooey Deschanel and others.
Recall that the summit of the Heads of State and Government of the European Union set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 already by 2030.
Earlier it was reported that the world has passed the “point of no return” of global warming and even a complete reduction in carbon dioxide emissions will not stop the rise in temperatures.
