The equitable distribution of coronavirus vaccines is in “grave danger,” which could lead to a catastrophic moral failure.
This was stated by the World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adanom Gebreyesus at an online press conference on January 18.
The WHO chief noted that the emergence of new and rapidly spreading strains of the coronavirus makes the rapid and equitable introduction of vaccines even more important. However, it could become “another brick in the wall of inequality between the well-off and the poor.
Gebreyesus emphasized that more than 39 million doses of various vaccines have now been distributed in the 49 highest-income countries, while only 25 doses have been administered in the one lowest-income country.
“I have to be frank: The world is on the brink of a catastrophic moral failure, and its price will be paid by the lives and livelihoods of the world's poorest countries,” the WHO chief stressed.
He also criticized some rich countries, in which young and healthy people are vaccinated before health workers, and in poorer countries, the elderly.
