Rocket attacks by the Iranian Armed Forces on U.S. bases in Iraq were the beginning of a major operation, “Martyr Soleimani", which will continue throughout the region. This was stated by Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizade, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Air and Space Forces (elite units of the Iranian Armed Forces).
“Rocket attacks on one of the most important U.S. military bases were the beginning of a major operation, “Martyr Soleimani,” which will have a continuation throughout the region,” the Fars agency quoted him as saying. He added that “the real purpose (of Iran's actions) is to expel the U.S. from the region.
Amir Ali Hajizade stressed that the purpose of the Iranian missile attack on the U.S. military facilities in Iraq was not to kill enemy soldiers but to damage military equipment.
“We did not seek to kill (U.S. troops), but to damage enemy military equipment,” he said.
Hajizade added that “the Iranian troops fired 13 missiles at U.S. bases, but were ready to launch a hundred missiles.
The situation in the Middle East escalated sharply after the January 3 night U.S. missile strike near Baghdad Airport killed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander Al-Quds Special Forces Qasem Soleimani. In response, on the night of January 8, Tehran launched a rocket attack on two sites in Iraq that were used by the U.S. military: Ain al-Assad base and Erbil airport.
