The U.S. votes to impeach Trump. The Capitol is cordoned off by the National Guard

The last time troops were in the Capitol was during the Civil War

In the U.S., where the House of Representatives is trying to impeach incumbent President Donald Trump, National Guardsmen have cordoned off the Capitol building. They are guarding the government in case of possible protests.

It is reported by ABC News.

It is noted that Speaker Nancy Pelosi went outside the Capitol this morning to thank the National Guardsmen who were on duty during last week's protests.

U.S. Capitol Historical Society President and CEO Jane Campbell said the last time troops “lived” in the Capitol was during the Civil War — when the building was still under construction and the open space was used as a field hospital.

At lunchtime there were 6,600 troops in Washington, now there are more. The National Guard now has 20,000 guardsmen to provide security during the inauguration, most of whom may be in Washington this weekend.

Recall that last week supporters of incumbent U.S. President Donald Trump stormed the main Capitol building, where the winner of the election was to be determined and announced.
