The United States is preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia's Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. The current administration of President Donald Trump plans to impose new restrictions.
Some European companies have been warned about such plans by the U.S. State Department, Reuters sources said.
“We're trying to inform companies about the risks and convince them to leave [the project] before it's too late,” said an anonymous source at the State Department.
According to his sources, the State Department will submit a report on Jan. 14-15 on the companies it believes are helping North Stream 2. The document could include firms involved in insurance, laying the underwater section of the “pipe” and checking the project. In particular, the Swiss Zurich Insurance Group could find itself under sanctions, analysts say.
The decision on new sanctions against Nord Stream 2 may become one of the last in the presidential cadence of Donald Trump. It is assumed that he will leave the White House by January 20.
Earlier it became known that one of the key players is leaving the project “Nord Stream 2”. The Norwegian company DNV GL refused to certify the pipeline because of the threat of US sanctions.
Recall that U.S. sanctions, which came into force on January 1 with the adoption of the U.S. Congressional defense budget, in fact, prohibit foreign companies to provide services for testing, inspection, and certification of Russian gas pipelines Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream. Participants were given 30 days to leave the projects.
