Pakistan plunged into darkness

A major power outage left almost the entire country without electricity. The authorities are trying to start up the Tarbela power plant.

Large-scale power outages occurred in the cities of Pakistan. Federal Energy Minister Omar Ayub said on Twitter that the power outage was caused by an accident — “a frequency drop in the national distribution system,” Dawn writes.

Almost simultaneously the cities of Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Multan, Kasur, and other settlements were left without electricity.

Ayub said attempts are being made to start the Tarbela power plant, which will result in the gradual restoration of the power supply.

“People are encouraged to be patient,” the minister wrote on a social network.
