Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said that the current U.S. President Donald Trump should be immediately removed from power.
According to her statement, the leader of the country has committed “subversive acts” and should be removed in accordance with the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on the inability of the president to perform his duties. Pelosi said the U.S. president is a “very dangerous person” who should not be in office. “This is a most urgent priority,” she said.
The House speaker issued an ultimatum, noting that if Trump's cabinet did not try to remove him under the amendment, Congress could organize impeachment.
A temporary transfer of presidential powers is stipulated by the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, adopted in 1967. Prior to U.S. President George W. Bush, this amendment had been invoked only once. In 1985, Ronald Reagan transferred powers to George H.W. Bush for the duration of surgery.
On January 6, protesting Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building and surrounded the Senate chamber. The Senate and the House of Representatives adjourned to confirm the results of the last election, according to which Democrat Joe Biden won the presidential election. Trump urged supporters to act peacefully and support the police. The Capitol building in Washington was later cleared of protesters. Four people were killed in the protests, and police detained nearly 70 rioters.
