Russian hackers got access to Microsoft source code

Hackers connected with the Russian authorities, who are suspected of large-scale hacking of corporate and government systems of the United States, gained access to the internal systems of Microsoft Corporation and the source code that is used to create software products.

Microsoft said the hackers gained access to several internal accounts and were only able to view the source code, but were not able to make changes to it.

At the same time, the company did not specify which part of the source code the hackers looked at.

The publication notes: the new information that hackers have gained access to the internal systems of Microsoft, raises questions about the intentions of the hackers.

The company claims that before the situation “was investigated and corrected”, the attackers did not have time to make any changes.

“This incident does not pose a threat to the security of our services or any customer data, but we want to be open and share what we have learned while fighting what we believe is a very dangerous government-backed entity,” said Microsoft.

Microsoft previously admitted that it had downloaded the hacker-transformed software from SolarWinds, like many other US companies and government agencies.

Note, as it became known, hackers, hacked into the software of the American IT company SolarWinds and used updates for its Orion software released between March and June 2020 for further cyberattacks on American government agencies and companies.

The latest cyberattack has affected the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI).

We also reported that in recent cyberattacks, attackers gained access to at least one private sector company email and Microsoft cloud customer information.
