The European Parliament will not have time to ratify the trade agreement between the UK and the European Union by the end of 2020.
This was stated by the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli.
The European official noted that in a few days the EU legislation will no longer apply to the UK.
“The UK government has made it clear it wants to leave the Single Market, the Customs Union, and end free movement. The decisions have implications – travel and trade between the EU and the UK will not be as smooth as before. The UK government also chose not to allow a smoother transition. by extending the deadline for reaching an agreement, “Sassoli complained.
According to him, the European Parliament welcomes an intensive dialogue and unprecedented exchanges and unity between EU institutions throughout the entire process.
“However, parliament regrets that the length of the negotiations and the last-minute nature of the agreement do not allow for a proper parliamentary review before the end of the year,” Sassoli said.
He stressed that the European Parliament is ready to respond responsibly in order to minimize the inconvenience to citizens and businesses and to prevent chaos and negative consequences of the rejection scenario. The EP will continue its work in the respective committees and in the full plenary session in the new year before making a decision.
We will remind you, the European Union and Great Britain entered into a trade deal on Brexit. Thus, the last obstacle that prevented the United Kingdom from finally leaving the EU was removed.
The agreement will enter into force on January 1, 2021. It will replace the agreements that were in place between the parties during the transition period that lasted from February 1, when Britain officially left the EU.
The preliminary agreement must be ratified by the European Parliament and the EU member states.
