Senator Ted Cruz of the Republican Party expects that new sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 project will come into effect soon, and they may also interfere with its implementation.
According to him, the second wave of sanctions is aimed at operations on the construction of the gas pipeline, affects the certification process and insurance companies. The Republican noted that the second wave of restrictive measures was prepared “with surgical precision to prevent the completion of construction” of the pipeline. Cruz indicated that this is a “definite signal” for all international investors.
“This project, in my opinion, will never be launched and gas will never be launched through the pipeline,” he said.
The senator added that “the second wave of sanctions” will “be signed” in the near future, as it has already passed the approval of both chambers of the US Congress.
Earlier, the project operator Nord Stream 2 AG announced that the pipe-laying vessel Fortuna had begun laying the unfinished section of Nord Stream 2 in German waters.
The implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project was suspended due to the sanctions imposed by the United States in December 2019 against the contractors of the gas pipeline.
