US President-elect Joe Biden intends to nominate former presidential candidate Pete Buttigic as head of the country's Ministry of Transport, The New York Times, Associated Press (AP), and CNN reported, citing sources.
Mr. Buttigic competed with Joe Biden for the right to run for the Democratic nomination but withdrew his candidacy in March 2020. CNN notes that this is the first time in US history that an elected president intends to appoint his rival in the presidential election as a minister. If the Senate approves the appointment of Buttigic, then he will also become the first openly gay US ministry.
Prior to the start of the 2020 election campaign, Pete Buttidzic was mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and did not hold any higher positions. After Mr. Buttigic withdrew his candidacy, Mr. Biden publicly foreshadowed his future in US politics. “I promise that throughout your life you will see Pete much more often than me,” Mr. Biden said at a joint rally in March (quoted by AP).
