Russia is considered responsible for the attack by hackers on the US Treasury

Russian hackers are suspected of spying and hacking into the US Treasury system. Due to the hacker attack, a meeting of the National Security Council was urgently convened.

A group of hackers broke into the systems of the US Treasury and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and stole their data. The United States suspects that this is the case of cybercriminals from Russia, writes Reuters, citing its own sources.

Washington believes that Russian hackers have been spying on US Treasury emails for a long time.

“According to people familiar with the matter, hackers believed to be working for Russia are monitoring internal mail traffic at the US Treasury and Commerce Department, adding that they fear the hacks so far uncovered may be the tip of the iceberg.” — notes the edition.

Due to the hacking of the system in the White House on Saturday, December 12, a meeting of the National Security Council was held. The Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI have been asked to investigate.

The US government has not publicly named the country it considers responsible for the hacker attacks. But sources familiar with the investigation noted that it was about the Russian Federation.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin has already stated that Russia has nothing to do with tracking and hacking US Treasury emails.

As a reminder, the hackers received documents on the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccines. It is not yet known whether the data of the study participants got to the hackers. However, none of the BioNTech / Pfizer systems were compromised.

We also wrote earlier that hackers caused $1 trillion in damage to the global economy. Governments and companies around the world lost an estimated $945 billion due to hacker attacks and another $145 billion due to additional cybersecurity spending.
