Next year, the world may face a powerful economic recession caused by the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, and the emergence of a vaccine will not be able to prevent this.
This, speaking on December 11 at a forum on international cooperation after the pandemic, said the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres.
“We are facing the worst global recession in 80 years. Extreme poverty and the threat of hunger are on the rise,” he said at an event organized by the Nobel Committee.
The reasons for this situation Guterres called “the already existing inequality and unjust system.”
He again called on countries to abandon “vaccine nationalism”, stressing that such behavior by countries has led to a lack of a coordinated response to the pandemic.
“The response was fragmented and chaotic. Countries, regions and even cities competed with each other for the supply of basic necessities and advanced medical workers,” the UN Secretary-General added.
Gutterisch urged to make coronavirus vaccines public domain.
Recall that earlier he called the world's unpreparedness for solidarity and cooperation as the reason that the situation around the coronavirus pandemic got out of control.
