US sanctions over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline have been fiercely criticized by Russia, Der Tagesspiegel writes. The Kremlin is angry and is preparing a concrete response. This information was confirmed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the decision to impose sanctions shows that no partner can rely on the United States anymore: “When the closest allies are punished for solving their economic problems, their energy security objectives, I think, neither one country in the world should no longer doubt that if the United States promises them something, they will be abandoned at any moment. ”
US sanctions threaten companies involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2. US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell spoke out in defense of these measures, calling them “pro-European.” The German authorities criticized the sanctions, but at the same time announced that they would not take retaliatory measures.
Allseas, a Swiss pipe-laying company, immediately suspended operations and withdrew its ships from the Baltic Sea. The company said that they left the project not for a while, but forever. Nevertheless, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak is convinced that the construction of the gas pipeline will soon be completed.
According to him, the remaining 130 kilometers will be laid by Gazprom with the help of its ships, which, however, will delay the deadline for the completion of the project by several months. In addition, Russia and Ukraine, with the active mediation of the EU and in particular Berlin, managed to reach agreements on gas transit, the newspaper notes.
