The planet will get warmer by more than 3°C — UN

The average global temperature may rise by more than 3C, despite the fact that” thanks “ to the pandemic, it was possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The average temperature on the planet before the end of the century may increase by more than 3C. And this is despite the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions caused by the coronavirus pandemic — from the report of the United Nations environment program (UNEP), published on Wednesday, December 9.

“In General, we are moving towards a 3.2C warmer world by the end of this century, even if the conditions set out in the Paris agreement are fully implemented,” the document says.

UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen noted that the pandemic is expected to lead to an economic downturn that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 7% this year.

According to Andersen, the expected reduction in emissions in 2020 will reduce global warming by the only 0.01C in 30 years.

The UN official also added that in 2019, greenhouse gas emissions reached a maximum, and 2020 is the warmest year on record.

“Glaciers are melting at an unprecedented rate,” Andersen said.

The day before it was reported that the North pole recorded a record rapid warming. In 2020, the North pole was warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet.

Before that, we wrote that in 2020, November in the world was the warmest in the history of observations. The previous record was set in 2016 and 2019.
