Google, Microsoft, and other Internet search tech giants should make the sorting of search results more transparent. Such a requirement is formulated in the guidelines published yesterday by the European Commission.
Following the guidelines, which are immediately effective, draft rules governing the practical application of these guidelines are due to be published next week.
Smaller competitors and other companies have long complained about the arbitrariness and lack of transparency in the actions of tech giants, who, at their discretion, rank products and services in search results. In particular, we are talking about the priority given to the issuance of larger companies.
For this practice, antitrust regulators fined the EU Google more than 8 billion euros between 2017 and 2019, accusing the search engine of unfairly promoting its own products to the detriment of competitors.
The guidelines say that online platforms should make available algorithmic parameters that determine to rank.
