The US announced the withdrawal of troops from Somalia

This decision does not mean that the United States is weakening its military presence in Africa, the Pentagon assured.

US President Donald Trump has decided to withdraw almost all the American military contingent from Somalia. This was announced the day before by the Pentagon press service.

“The US President ordered the US Department of Defense and African Command to redeploy most of the troops from Somalia to other countries in early 2021,” the statement said.

The American defense department assured that this does not mean that the United States is weakening its military presence in Africa.

“This decision means that some militaries can leave eastern Africa. However, the rest of the forces will be deployed in neighboring countries with Somalia, and they will be able to conduct operations in Somali territory to maintain pressure on extremist groups based in Somalia,” the Pentagon said.

According to The Wall Street Journal, about 700 US troops are stationed in Somalia. As the newspaper notes, some of them will be transferred to bases in Kenya and Djibouti.

We will remind, on November 28 in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu, a suicide bomber detonated a bomb in a cafe just a few hours after the end of the visit of the acting US Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller. The explosion killed six people.
