German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas expressed doubt that the US position on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will change after the beginning of the presidency of Democrat Joe Biden. He said this in an interview with Der Spiegel magazine, published on Friday, December 4.
“We have no illusions. There are almost no differences between Republicans and Democrats on this issue. But here, too, a new tonality and a different form of confrontation will help to move forward,” Maas said.
The minister stressed that Berlin considers the US sanctions against Nord Stream 2 unlawful and is not going to change its position on this matter. He understands the economic aspect of the position of the Americans, who want to supply liquefied gas to the EU countries.
“From a political point of view, we look at the situation differently from the United States: we do not make ourselves dependent on anyone through Nord Stream 2,” Maas is convinced.
Earlier it became known that US President Donald Trump promised to veto the country's defense budget. This document also includes sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
On the eve of the US Congress completed work on the bill on the defense budget for 2021. Among other things, the bill also includes extended sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 project.
