Moderna vaccine: three advantages of the American drug and one “but”

The coronavirus vaccine, which is being developed by the American pharmaceutical company Moderna, is easier to transport and store compared to a number of drugs from other manufacturers.

The head physician of the Moderna company Tal Sachs told the German edition of FOCUS Online about this.

The advantage of the Moderna vaccine is that no new infrastructure is needed to transport it. And in recent years, the company has created the appropriate conditions, and the refrigerators already available in pharmacies, clinics and doctors' offices are enough for storing vaccines.

“It can be stored in the freezer for up to six months, in a normal refrigerator for up to one month. This makes logistics easier,” Sachs said.

The Pfizer — BioNTech vaccine must be stored at -70 C, and after thawing, it will only be usable for about five days at a temperature of 2-8 C, which requires the creation of very expensive infrastructure.

Safety and side effects

Speaking about the side effects of the Moderna vaccine, the head physician noted that two things must be distinguished: safety and tolerance: “Safety is when it comes to the serious harmful effects of vaccination on the body, tolerance is unpleasant, but harmless and temporary side effects. The safety of the vaccine is very high.“

The American company said that during the third phase of trials, in which 30 thousand people took part, its vaccine showed effectiveness of 94.5%. (Pfizer-BioNTech is 95% effective. A vaccine developed by Oxford University and the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca was 70% effective.)

Moderna intends to price its coronavirus vaccine in the order of $ 25-30 per dose, which is $ 50-60 per course. (The Pfizer-BioNTtech Alliance has priced its vaccines at $19.5 per dose, and the UK-Sweden AstraZeneca at $ 3-4.)
