EU leaders discuss EU-US relations with Biden
Presidents of the European Commission (EC) and the Council of the European Union Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel held telephone talks with US President-elect Joseph Biden, during which they discussed relations between the EU and the United States and invited him to visit Brussels.
“Let's rebuild a strong EU-US alliance. I just spoke with President-elect Biden and invited him to a special meeting of the 27 EU countries in Brussels next year. Now is the time to join forces in the fight against COVID-19 (a disease caused by the coronavirus), climate change, security, “Michelle wrote on Twitter on Monday.
“I was delighted to speak with President-elect Biden. I congratulated him on his victory. This is a new beginning for the EU-US global partnership. Strong joint work can shape a global agenda based on cooperation, multilateralism, solidarity, and shared values,” she said in her von der Leyen's turn.
The US general election was held on November 3. According to forecasts by leading American media, Democrat Joseph Biden has secured the support of over 270 electors, whose votes he needs to defeat Republican Donald Trump in the struggle for the presidency. Biden announced his triumph. Trump did not admit defeat and announced the decision to go to courts about the counting of votes, since, in his opinion, there were numerous violations by Democrats in the elections.
