Medicines for the rich: what's the problem with the Pfizer vaccine — BioNTech

Developed by the American-German alliance Pfizer — BioNTech, the coronavirus vaccine shows 90% effectiveness, but it has one feature that can negate all the advantages over vaccines from other manufacturers — storage temperature.

Writes about this publication Deutsche Well.

The vaccine must be stored at a temperature of -70 C, and after thawing it will be used only for about five days at a temperature of 2-8 C. Moreover, none of the currently existing vaccines requires such strong freezing.

The transport of billions of vaccine doses around the world must take place under extreme storage conditions. However, existing “cold chains” designed for transportation at low temperatures from the place of production directly to the consumer are not able to provide the necessary conditions.

Pfizer has found its own short-term solution — developed “temperature containers” the size of a suitcase, capable of storing up to five thousand doses of vaccine. Filled with dry ice, they keep the vaccine at the required temperature for about 10 days (provided they are not opened). The containers themselves can be stored at 15-25 C.
