More than 75 thousand Colombians were left without electricity due to Hurricane Iota

More than 75 thousand residents of the Colombian department of San Andres and Providencia, located in the Caribbean Sea, were left without electricity due to the fifth category “Iota” hurricane. This was announced on Monday by the governor of the region, Evert Hawkins.

“There is no electricity in the archipelago,” he wrote on his Twitter.

The governor added that there is no connection with the Providencia municipality. “Mobile and satellite phones are not working,” he added.

Iota was the first hurricane of the current year to reach the highest category on the Saffir-Simpson scale. It is located 130 km off the coast of Nicaragua and is moving westward at a speed of 14.76 km / h. The maximum wind speed within the atmospheric phenomenon is 72.2 m / s.

The cyclone is expected to strike Nicaragua on Tuesday night local time.
