How much does it cost to connect to Elon Musk's “space Internet”?

US residents began to receive letters with a commercial offer from SpaceX

Starlink's global internet coverage will require beta users $99 per month, plus a one-time payment of $499 for equipment: user terminal, mounting rack, and router. At first, connection speed and latency will float and there may be short periods of disconnection. The stable operation of the service is expected by mid-2021.

This is reported by Arstechnica, citing letters from SpaceX. They began to receive US residents who had previously registered on the Starlink website and expressed a desire to take part in an extended commercial test of the satellite Internet service.

As the letter from SpaceX suggests, users are encouraged to “not expect anything fantastic from the connection.” In the early months, data rates will vary from 50 to 150 Mbps, and latency will be 20 to 40 ms.

At the same time, Starlink emphasizes that users will receive a completely competitive Internet that will not depend on landline operators, line breaks, fiber damage, weather conditions, and other problems inherent in landline operators.

“By purchasing the equipment once, you can then move around the country any number of times and carry your satellite Internet with you, without waiting for more than a week to connect to a new local operator,” SpaceX said in a letter.

How many proposals SpaceX has sent out to US residents is currently unknown. Earlier, the company reported that the number of applications for connection on the Starlink website exceeded 700 thousand.

Recall that SpaceX on October 18 successfully launched the Falcon 9 launch vehicle, which delivered another 60 Starlink mini-satellites into orbit. This is the 14th launch of Internet satellites since May 2019, now there are 833 satellites in orbit.

SpaceX is one of a number of companies looking to place large constellations of satellites in orbit for global internet coverage. They also include OneWeb, Telesat, LeoSat, and Amazon.
