The US to call for the separation of large tech companies
Whether this plan will receive majority approval is unknown
The US House of Representatives antitrust subcommittee is expected to release a report this week covering Amazon.com, Apple, Facebook, and Alphabet. This report contains a “slightly veiled call for separation” of large technology companies. So it says in a draft response to the report of one of the congressmen, which came to the disposal of Reuters. A representative of the congressman confirmed the authenticity of the draft.
The draft expresses concerns about the strength of large tech firms and their propensity for “killer acquisitions” to eliminate competitors.
However, the author of the letter objected to the plan, which requires listed companies to clearly define “one line of business”. As you know, the social media platform Facebook also owns Instagram and WhatsApp, Google search engine provider YouTube and Android OS, and e-commerce leader Amazon run a huge cloud computing division. The narrowing of the scope of activities is, in fact, a requirement to divide these companies into parts.
