Japan will buy for $146 million islands for US military exercises

In Japan, finally decided on the purchase of the island for the needs of the US military

An object for the military exercises of the Americans will be built on the island of Nagashima in the near future.

The Japanese government has decided to buy from a private property a desert island off the southwest coast for $146 million for US military exercises. This was stated by Secretary-General of the Cabinet of Ministers of the country Yoshihide Suga.

It is noted that the agreement on the purchase of Magesima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture was reached last Friday, November 29, “after discussions between the Ministry of Defense and the developer, which owns a significant part of the island.” An object for US military exercises will be built on the island “in the near future,” said the secretary-general of the government.

Some residents who live on islands near Magashima expressed concern that the facility may make too much noise.

Currently, the U.S. Air Force training takes place on the island of Iwo Jima, 1.2 thousand km from Tokyo. Washington demanded a change of location because Iwo Jima was too far from the US military base in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Recall that every year Japan pays the United States $2 billion for the stay in the country 54 thousand US troops. This price includes the operation of the American base on the island of Okinawa, as well as the maintenance of ships of the Seventh Fleet. US President Donald Trump considered this amount insufficient and wants the Japanese to pay Washington $8 billion a year.
