As you know, the PlayStation 5 received an ultra-fast SSD with data transfer rates up to 5.5 GB / s. At the time of the first announcement of the PS5, this figure was impressive even against the background of an SSD with a PCIe 4.0 interface, but the Samsung 980 Pro is already preparing to go on sale at speeds up to 7 GB / s.
True, the Sony console has a number of architectural features that make its storage subsystem even faster. Sony originally talked about 8-9 GB / s speed for compressed data using the Kraken hardware decoder. As it turned out, this is not the limit. Oodle revealed that Sony has licensed its Oodle Texture technology, which is responsible for compressing textures in the GPU. And if in Kraken the compression ratios are 1.45 to 1 or 1.64 to 1, then in the case of Oodle Texture (together with Kraken) we are talking about a ratio of 3.16 to 1, and Oodle received this figure in a certain fresh game, and not just on paper.
And this already gives us a bandwidth of over 17 GB / s! Of course, all this should be supported by a specific game, and it is unlikely that such projects will see the light of day in the near future, but the life cycle of consoles is not calculated in two or three years.
