Microsoft buys Bethesda

The transaction amount is a record for the industry

Microsoft's strategy in the console market is considered by many to be a losing one since the Xbox actually does not have full-fledged exclusives: all games that are released on Microsoft consoles are also released on PCs.

At the same time, this is not a strategy imposed by someone — Microsoft decided to act in this way quite consciously since for it the Windows PC market is also its home market. In addition, Microsoft at one time began to actively buy various development studios so that an increasing number of games did not go to PlayStation.

And today something happened that, probably, few could have imagined. Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media. Perhaps ZeniMax Media itself is not known to all gamers, but Bethesda is definitely known to many. Bethesda is part of ZeniMax Media. Of course, Microsoft bought all of its internal studios and brands with it. And this is a very impressive list of very famous projects.

Bethesda Game Studios owns The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Starfield, id Software owns DOOM and Quake, Arkane is known for Dishonored, Prey (2017), and Deathloop, MachineGames are the creators of Wolfenstein, Tango Gameworks you might know from The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo and Microsoft now own The Elder Scrolls Online.

The press release does not say anything about ZeniMax Media studios' games being exclusive for Xbox and PC, but this is to be expected. And if so, it will be a huge blow to Sony and PlayStation. But for now, don't panic. In addition, an interesting situation has now formed: the games Ghostwire: Tokyo and Deathloop will be temporary exclusives of the PlayStation 5, but this is only because the corresponding agreements were reached long ago.

It is also worth noting that all new Bethesda games will be released immediately on the Xbox Game Pass service, which will be another very serious advantage of the Xbox over the PlayStation, even if these new games are not exclusive to Microsoft consoles.

Microsoft itself did not name the amount of the deal, but the famous journalist Jason Schreier claims that ZeniMax Media cost it $7.5 billion. If so, it will be the largest deal in the history of the video game market.
