In modern history, there has not yet been such a long period without a military confrontation between the major powers, the UN Secretary-General noted.
For 75 years of its existence, the United Nations Organization has coped with its main goal — the prevention of the Third World War. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said this at a ceremony dedicated to the anniversary of the organization on Monday 21 September.
“It took two world wars and the horrors of the Holocaust for world leaders to come to international cooperation and the rule of law,” the secretary-general noted. “This cooperation has yielded results. The third world war, which so many feared, was averted.”
Guterres drew attention to the fact that in modern history there has not yet been such a long period without a military confrontation between the major powers.
“This is a major achievement that the participating States can be proud of and that must be preserved,” he is convinced.
“However, there is still much to be done,” the UN head said. Among the world's major issues, he listed gender inequality, climate change, rising poverty, the spread of hatred, geopolitical tensions, and nuclear weapons.
The UN was created to maintain and strengthen international peace and security, develop cooperation between nations based on respect for the principle of equality and self-determination of peoples. It is intended to be the center for coordinating the actions of nations in achieving common goals. The UN Charter entered into force on October 24, 1945. Today 193 states are its members.
The foundations of the activity and the structure of the organization were developed during the Second World War by members of the anti-Hitler coalition.
Earlier, Antonio Guterres said that he considers the coronavirus COVID-19 the main threat to security in the world at the moment. According to him, it is not worth relying too much on the vaccine — “it will not eliminate the crisis by itself.”
