Chinese probe “Tianwen-1” has already covered 155 million km on the way to Mars

The Chinese Martian probe Tianwen-1 has already covered 155 million kilometers on its way to the Red Planet, Chief Designer of the first Chinese mission to Mars Zhang Rongqiao said, Xinhua News Agency reported on September 18.

As of 8:30 local time on September 18, the probe was in a stable state at a distance of 18 million km from Earth, Zhang said during the China Space Conference 2020, held in Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province.

The probe successfully took photos of the Earth and the Moon, and also made its first orbital correction, while checking the operation of all systems. China launched a probe on July 23 this year as part of its own mission to explore the planets of the solar system.

A spacecraft flying towards Mars consists of an orbiter, a lander, and a rover. It is expected to reach the red planet by February 2021. The expected time for the descent of the probe to the surface is May 2021, that is, three months after Tianwen 1 reaches the planet's orbit.
