On Wednesday, September 16, Munich State Court started the trial of mass doping at the World Ski Championships 2019 in Austria and Germany, as well as in cycling. On September 16 five people were brought to court: the main suspect вЂ” sports doctor Mark Sh. and four of his alleged accomplices who, according to the investigation, had been helping athletes from different countries to use doping for several years.
According to the prosecutor's office, Mark Sh.'s clients were at least 23 athletes from eight countries, mostly cyclists and representatives of winter sports. The services of the doctor were also used by former top cyclists Italian Alessandro Petacchi and German Danilo Hondo. Petacchi denied cooperation with Mark S. and Hondo confessed to using doping.
Autohemotransfusion вЂ” blood doping
According to the investigation, doping was administered to athletes вЂ” a transfusion of their own blood, pre-selected and preserved. In this case, Mark Sh. began working with cyclists and skiers in 2011. It is reported that since 2014 he has had assistants who collected, transported, and delivered blood to athletes.
The defendants are charged with the commercial use of prohibited doping methods or assistance in their implementation by an organized criminal group. In one case, according to the prosecutor's office, it is also a question of causing dangerous bodily injuries.
At the world championship, the international doping network was disclosed
At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld, Austria (the federal state of Tyrol), as well as in Germany, nine people were detained and 16 searches were conducted on the case of suppression of the international doping network. It was a coordinated operation of the Austrian Criminal Office, as well as the Departments for Organized Crime and Customs Investigations and Inquiry of Munich.
