The YouTube video service will launch its own platform, an analog of the Chinese social network TikTok, which will be called Shorts. This was reported in the official blog of the company.
The new service will be designed for users who record short videos on their smartphones and add music and special effects to them. The video service team said that they are targeting a video length of 15 seconds, and Shorts will include simple editing tools, like TikTok — the ability to paste video clips from different cameras of the device and speed controllers.
“We are pleased to announce the creation of YouTube Shorts, a new ability to shoot short videos and upload them directly to YouTube for creators and artists who want to use only their mobile phone,” the company said in a statement.
YouTube will begin beta testing the new video service in India, wherein June authorities decided to block 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok. The country's government called them “potentially dangerous” applications that “handle confidential user data too freely,” including reading the clipboard. The lockdown came just days after about 15 Indian soldiers were killed in clashes with Chinese soldiers along the border in Ladakh on June 15.
At the same time, the owner of TikTok, ByteDance has repeatedly denied that it shares user data with the Chinese authorities.
YouTube is not the first company to try to carve out a niche for the Chinese social network after its ban in India. In July, a week after the escalation of the conflict with China, a similar service Reels in the country launched Instagram — a Facebook spokesman then said that India was a “priority” for the California company. Prior to that, the company tested the service in Brazil, France, and Germany, and the start of operations in an Asian country was "well received by consumers.” On August 5, Facebook announced that it is fully launching Reels in more than 50 countries around the world, including the United States, Mexico, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, and Australia.
