Without a $15 billion commitment over the next three months, an opportunity will be missed to advance research, increase production, and begin shipping new tests and drugs for COVID-19.
The international community should commit $35 billion to accelerate research and development of tests and vaccines for the COVID-19 coronavirus. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said this at a meeting led by the World Health Organization.
Guterres said at least $15 billion needs to be raised over the next three months.
“Without committing $15 billion over the next three months, we will miss an opportunity to advance research, increase production and begin shipping new tests and drugs for COVID-19,” Guterres said.
The meeting is dedicated to the WHO Act Accelerator, with South Africa and Norway as co-chairs of the project coordinating council.
The initiative aims to accelerate research related to the coronavirus, be it improving tests or developing vaccines. At the moment, the project has received about $3 billion, which were necessary for its launch. It is assumed that at least $15 billion of the $35 billion should be invested in it.
