China's developments will lead to the “era of digital authoritarianism” — USA

China's proliferation of digital surveillance technologies to “authoritarian governments” of the world is expected by the US Department of Defense, US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said on September 9 at an online forum on artificial intelligence technologies.

Esper, relying on the data that China is engaged in developments in the field of artificial intelligence, is sure that these are “surveillance tools”. The defense minister said China is aiming to spread the technology to “other authoritarian governments to start a new era of digital authoritarianism.”

The Pentagon admits that the United States is also working in the field of artificial intelligence technologies. However, Esper stressed that the goal of American developments is “to protect the US Constitution and the sacred rights of all Americans.” The US Department of Defense sees the spread of technology abroad as part of the common values with their “partners”: “individual freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
