Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said that he had informed his American counterpart Donald Trump about the impossibility of Ankara abandoning the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems.
“We explained to Trump that Turkey will not back down on the S-400 issue. I told Trump about how Turkey came to buy S-400 systems, and he recognized our right,” the Turkish leader said during a speech in Ankara.
Erdogan said earlier that the position of US leader Donald Trump on the implementation of the contract for the supply of Ankara F-35 aircraft against the backdrop of the conflict over the S-400 has become more positive.
“We proposed creating a joint commission to resolve the issue with the S-400. The US says that the S-400 is not a suitable F-35 system. They don’t give us the F-35 either. However, I saw that Trump has become much more positive in this regard, and his approaches are more productive, “Erdogan said.
Recall that earlier in the White House they demanded that Ankara abandon the S-400, arguing that the Russian system is incompatible with NATO and poses a threat to the US-led F-35 fighter program. In this regard, US President Donald Trump has banned the sale of Turkey F-35 over already signed contracts.
In addition, Donald Trump intended to meet with a group of senators to discuss possible sanctions against Turkey over Ankara’s purchase of Russian S-400 systems.
