Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said he was ready to take the lead and become a mediator between the protesters and the Belarusian authorities, the press service of the Lithuanian president said.
It is noted that Nauseda had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The parties discussed the situation in Belarus and possible cooperation between Lithuania and Ukraine in order to resolve the situation.
“The head of Lithuania added that our country is ready to take the leading role and become a mediator between the protesters and the Belarusian authorities. According to the President, this is the duty of Lithuania as a free EU member state that has suffered from repressive and occupation regimes. According to the head of the country, none other than Iceland's support provided to Lithuania 30 years ago during the restoration of our independence, inspired the leaders and civil society of the state to seek freedom. This is the mission of Lithuania and other European states supporting our mediation initiative, ”reads the press service of the President of Lithuania.
In addition, Presidents Nauseda and Zelensky saw a way out of the current situation in Belarus in the conduct of "new, fair and democratic presidential elections monitored by the OSCE."
The OSCE refused to observe the presidential elections in Belarus, which took place on August 9, and after which mass protest actions of the opposition began, which did not recognize their results. According to the CEC of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko won this election for the sixth time, gaining 80.1% of the vote. The opposition believes that Svetlana Tikhanovskaya won the election. Tikhanovskaya herself left for Lithuania after the presidential elections for security reasons.
