The U.S. has announced an unprecedented increase in demand for firearms

Arms sales in the U.S. have historically increased in the year of the presidential election, as buyers seek to insure themselves against the possible tightening of control over arms sales.

Smith & Wesson CEO Mark Smith said the demand for firearms in the U.S. was “in many ways unprecedented,” according to the Financial Times.

Between now and July 31, the company increased its revenue from firearms sales almost 2.5 times per year. The figure was $229 million against $95 million a year earlier.

In the reporting period, the Company made a net profit of USD 48.4 million, against a loss of USD 2.1 million a year earlier.

Smith himself says that “most” of the demand comes from people who are “just afraid for their personal safety and security” due to the pandemic and the unrest in the country.

The paper notes that U.S. arms sales have historically increased in the year of the presidential election as buyers seek to insure themselves against the possible tightening of controls over arms trafficking.

Recall that protests and riots over police action have once again begun in the United States.
