An oil tanker has been burning for two days 40 km from the coast of Sri Lanka.
It is noted that the Sri Lankan Navy is holding the New Diamond tanker at a safe distance to protect the coastline from oil spills. Reported by Reuters.
The fire broke out in the engine room of the ship on Thursday morning, September 3, and spread to the bridge of the tanker.
There are about 2 million barrels of oil on board.
Rescue operations were carried out with the participation of the Indian and Russian navies. Thanks to this, the fire was brought under control. It was possible to prevent the spread of fire to the cargo compartments with oil.
A spokesman for the Sri Lankan Navy said that fireboats continue to water the tanker.
