The potential successor to Merkel made a loud statement on the poisoning of Navalny
One of the favorites for the post of leader of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany and the potential successor of Angela Merkel as Chancellor Friedrich Merz is demanding a two-year freeze on the construction of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Such a decision, says the German politician, should be made due to the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny. He stated this in an interview with the popular publication Bild.
“Until now, despite all the doubts, I was in favor of continuing the construction of the pipeline. But after the attempted poisoning of Navalny, Europe must now react,” the politician said.
“I propose to introduce an immediate two-year freeze on construction, that is, a moratorium. Unfortunately, Putin only understands this language,” Merz emphasized.
We will remind, the head of the faction of the opposition party “Soyuz-90” / “Greens” in the Bundestag of Germany, Katrin Goering-Eckardt said that the poisoning of Navalny should be a reason to stop the construction of Nord Stream 2.
Another candidate for the post of head of the Christian Democratic Union, head of the Bundestag's foreign policy committee, Norbert Röttgen, said that the situation around Navalny's poisoning goes beyond the boundaries of German-Russian relations and requires a single European tough response, up to and including abandoning Nord Stream 2.
